The Benefits of Glycolic Acid

Natural & Organic Clinical Skincare

What is glycolic acid?

The smallest alpha hydroxy acid, derived from sugar cane. Glycolic acid is part of the group of active compounds known as AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids).   It is a natural skin care product that is derived from sugar cane plants such as sugar cane, pineapple and sugar beets and

is essentially a fruit acid. Because glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane, it is considered a natural product and falls under the same classification as citric acid from citrus fruits like lemons and oranges it’s botanical properties help to treat skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Melasma and Seborrheic kurtosis often used to treat scarring, skin discoloration and signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles revealing smoother, brighter,

younger looking skin.  Made up of small molecules, it is able to penetrate the skin deeply and easily. This makes it most effective for treating fine

lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness and uneven texture.

when used at low strengths, studies show that Glycolic Acid assists with boosting collagen & elastin production making it a great anti aging product. Glycolic Acid can penetrate deeper than the epidermis layer of the skin.down into the dermis layer itself  where collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid (your skins natural water-binding agent) are formed. Glycolic also acts as a water-binding agent, to draw & transfer water molecules from the air into the skin tissue, replenishing any lost moisture, plumping the skin. This is what ultimately helps reduce and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can transfer water molecules from the air into the skin tissue, replenishing any lost moisture. This makes it an effective ingredient in moisturizers when used at low strengths.

How Does It Work?

Glycolic acid contains small molecules that are able to penetrate into the skin. Once it penetrates under the surface it loosens up the desmosomes (glue-like substance that holds the skin cells together) and allows the skin to shed off the old dead cells. Once the skin has rid itself of the old cells it appears brighter and leaves your skin with a more, healthy glow.  This makes it most effective for treating fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness and uneven texture.

Benefits Of Glycolic Acid Use:

  • Provides a remarkably even exfoliation of the skin

  • Releases and dissolves dead skin cells - clearing up blocked pores and blackheads

  • A very effective acne treatment - particulary cystic acne which is caused by deep blockages of dead skin cells and sebum

  • Reduces fine lines and signs of premature aging by increasing cell turnover - meaning younger, healthier cells are now visible on the skin's surface

  • Acne scars (and other scar lesions) respond well to consistent glycolic acid treatment

  • Further products and treatments can penetrate deeper as it removes the 'barrier' of dead cells and surface grime

  • The effects are compound - meaning frequent use will provide better and better skin it minimizes the appearance of pores by keeping them clear and helping the surrounding cells to strengthen and regain elasticity.

  • Deep superficial, non-toxic peel tolerated by all skin types without wounding your skin with unsightly side effects. Nicknamed the “Lunch Hour Peel” often done during this time allowing you to return to work or activities without anyone knowing you had a cosmetic procedure.

  • An accelerated exfoliation removing dead and damaged cells replaced with fresh and healthy cells in several layers of the skin improving your over all appearance

Risks Of Using Glycolic Acid?

  • Because its an active substance, if not used correctly it can cause damage:

  • Skin needs to get used to it - a percentage that is too high can cause redness, irritation and in severe cases 'frosting' - a flaky crusting of skin that develops as a protection reaction, and which can last for days

  • Picking at this 'frosting' can cause hyper pigmentation and scarring- Don't pick it !

  • Use of other products containing Vitamin A,or  AHA's or if you are  taking Accutane for treatment of acne and other medications can cause a reaction as the skin is already sensitized. Retinol and AHA can be used together, but it needs to be done carefully.

  • It makes skin more sensitive to the sun - VERY important to wear sunscreen whenever using any sort of AHA to avoid pigmentation and further damage

  • Anything above a 10% concentration is high and needs to be used with knowledge and caution. Anything above 20% in everyday products isn't necessary  - don't mistake the highest percentage for the best effects!

  • Most at-home glycolic acid products are around pH 3-4 (slightly more acidic than normal skin), which is a good range for being effective.

  • The smart use of milder concentrations can provide the same benefits as a drastic peel, without the possible irritating side effects - and daily use is often more effective at keeping blackheads away, lighten scarring and tighten skin
